Breathing Fire ~ Komodo Dragon One of the biggest lizards in the world, the Komodo Dragon is an interesting animal. It reminds me of a dinosaur and I wanted to highlight it this week. Here are some interesting facts that I found on the Komodo Dragon! Fact #1 Komodo dragons are the world’s largest lizards, with adult males reaching up to 10 feet long. Fact #2 Komodos can see as far away as 300 meters. Fact #3 Adults can consume as much as 80% of their body weight in a single feeding, leaving on average only 12% of their meal behind. Fact #4 One of the Komodo dragon’s relatives called Megalania prisca, went extinct around 25,000 years ago and may have been up to six meters long and weighing up to 600 kilograms. Fact #5 Hatchlings usually weigh between 100 grams and are about 40 cm in length. Fact #6 The Komodo dragon flicks its tongue in the air to catch its prey's scent. Fact #7 The largest Komodo ever recorded was 3.13 meters long and weighed 166 kilograms, although it had likely just eaten, making it weigh substantially more than normal. Fact #8 Komodos can hear between 400 and 2,000 hertz, while humans can hear between 20 and 2,000. Fact #9 Komodos can run at about 11 miles an hour, but don’t chase their prey. Instead they wait for it to come by, then lunge. Fact #10 Komodo dragons can live to be 50 years old! I hope you learned as much as I did!
